Golf is so cool.
With full expectations of taking home the big hardware, the AC Flora Boys Varsity Golf brought home the Largest Runner Up Trophy In The History of High School Sports today at Port Royal Plantation, Barony Course, on Hilton Head Island, an Island so secure that it will never flip over.
Our Boys slipped down to HHISCUSA, skipping the towns of Bells and Okatie, as well as Snake Road, which sounded like a very inviting detour destination, by staying on I-95 and not dropping off on Exit 28, just south of the Coosawhatchie. Driving past Coggins Point, Mackays Point, Castle Hall, Bolen Hall, etc., this Cub Reporter felt at home, thinking I’m in King’s Grant, which gave me a warm sensation, but then I realized I had spilled my Starbucks in my lap.
Anyhoo, we snagged the Silver Medals. Over the past ten years, The Falcon Men’s Golf Team has won 8 State Championships, 1 Runner Up Title, and one Third Place Finish out of a Jillion. The total number of strokes between the actual record is less that ten in all three tournaments, out of 6,000 swings of a club or the sweep of a putter. Amazing.
This time, The Falcons came up four shots short of another State Title by less than a handful, 610-607, to a talented Hilton Head Island High School Team playing, fortunately for them, on Hilton Head Island.
Adam Hunt’s 75+73=148 led the way for the Boys We Love, earning him Tournament Medalist and All-State Team Honors.
Luke Sullivan played over the top as well, carding a 72+75=151 score, just missing tournament honors.
Guy Buffum delivered a consistent 77+76=153 effort for The Red and Blue Birds, and Wilhelm Elliott bombed his way to an 80+78=158 to round out the scoring. Ford Reynolds and Burch Harrison pounded it out for the Old Alma Mater as well. They were supported by teammates who made the trip to The Lowcountry, a true sign of the cohesiveness and dedication of this team.
“It was a solid season, yet we were just a little short of our goals. I’m proud of our guys, all 20 of them. Many of them came down to Hilton Head to support the team and that is awesome,” said Legendary Coach Robert Dargan. “State Runner-Up status will only serve as a motivator to come back next year and take the golden ring.”
“Our Seniors,” Coach Dargan lauded, “Provided awesome leadership all year. Wilhelm Elliott is off to The University of South Carolina, Henry Moses and Jack Sumner are heading to The Citadel, and Fred Manning has matriculated to The University of Virginia. I thank them and wish them the best of luck! All of us are so appreciative of their efforts and dedication to Flora Golf.”
Coach Dargan, as well as the parents and administrators of AC Flora Golfers, wish to thank Eric Bell, David Dargan, and Tom Elliott, the best assistants in sports, for their tireless dedication with their attitudes, instruction, and valuable time, all for the love of the boys and the love of the game.
“We will be back and will be stronger than ever! Thank you for all of your support!” asserted Coach Dargan, and This Cub Reporter believes him.
The record in 2019 was phenomenal. Our record for Varsity was 194-48. The Junior Varsity’s record finished at an amazing 31-2.
Of this years’ tournaments, AC Flora Boys Varsity Golf earned 6 Victories and 3 Runner Up Finishes, an incredible feat in any season in any sport.
Over the past two days, over 10,900 swings of a golf club occurred by the 16 Best Teams in South Carolina, and we were only four short.
Next Year in 2020, The Boys Varsity Golf South Carolina High School League AAAA State Championship will be held at the Forest Lake Club in Forest Acres, South Carolina, just off of Trenholm Road, in Mid May, replacing The Hackler Course in Conway, South Carolina, with AC Flora being the Host School.
Directions to the new venue for State are available if you are in need of them.
Golf is cool. Chicks dig them.
This Cub Reporter was just happy to tag along. See you at The Gathering.
