A.C. Flora senior basketball player Patrick Iriel made his college decision on Tuesday. The 6’10” 225 lb. big man committed to play for the University of South Carolina and continue his basketball career with the Gamecocks.
Iriel made his announcement on twitter , making him the first Gamecock basketball commitment for the 2020 recruiting cycle.
“Though I have not posted much about my recruiting process, the experience has taught me a lot…I am fully committed to the University of South Carolina!”
A three star recruit, Iriel chose the Gamecocks from a total of 12 offers, including many big name basketball schools. Boston College, Butler, Georgia Tech and Cal were just a few of the other programs that had reached out, but the rising senior decided to stay in Columbia after finishing his senior season at A.C. Flora. He is listed on 247Sports as the #4 ranked player in the state and the the number #57 ranked center in the nation.
Gamecock Basketball Head Coach Frank Martin also took to twitter to celebrate Iriel’s commitment.
“Gamecock Nation, we got bigger, stronger and better today.”
Iriel is a player whose presence alone will help South Carolina gain some much needed depth at the center position. Senior Maik Kotsar is set to graduate after the 2019-2020 season which will give Iriel an opportunity to compete for playing time and possibly a starting role soon after he arrives at South Carolina.
Iriel helped lead the Falcons to a 19-8 record during the 2018-2019 season, a year in which they went undefeated (10-0) in region play.
